Posts built around external links do reach fewer people, but almost every specific number you have read about it is untraceable. Our analysis of 34,000 LinkedIn posts finds something modest and useful: posts sharing an external article appear about 1.5 times more often among the weakest posts than the strongest, while native video shows the exact opposite pattern, over-indexing about 2.6 times among top performers. The scare figures, ranging from roughly a fifth of your reach to well over half, mostly come from pages that publish no sample size and no method. LinkedIn has never confirmed a penalty at all.

We filtered a public dataset of 34,012 influencer posts to 12,988 English posts, ranked each by (reactions + 4 x comments) divided by follower count, and compared the top decile of 1,298 posts against the bottom half of 6,494.

Three things are worth pulling out of that chart.
First, article shares do not vanish from the top decile. 22.1% of the best posts still carried one. A link is a handicap, not a disqualification, and any advice that treats it as fatal is arguing with its own data.
Second, the image row cuts against the universal advice to always attach a graphic. Images skew toward the bottom half, most likely because a stock graphic is the default dressing on a low-effort post. That comparison gets its own treatment in text-only versus image posts.
Third, look at what happens to raw engagement by format across the whole cohort, not just at the extremes.

The comments column is the interesting one. A typical shared-article post collects a third as many comments as a typical video post and half as many as a plain text post. That is the real shape of the problem: a headline with a URL under it gives a reader nothing to say. If you care about the difference between the two metrics, see impressions versus reach.
Do external links actually reduce LinkedIn reach?
This is the question everyone answers confidently and nobody sources. We went through the pages that carry the well-known figures and checked what each one actually publishes. Here is the honest state of the evidence.

Now the part nobody writes down. The percentages that circulate most widely, the ones in the range of roughly a fifth to well over half of your reach, and the popular claim that native posts get several times the distribution of link posts, did not appear with a method attached in any of the pages we checked. We are not saying those numbers are wrong. We are saying we could not find a primary source for them, and neither will you. They travel because they are quotable.
Notice also that two of the studies with real samples disagree with each other in an interesting way. Metricool measures a clear drop for posts with links. AuthoredUp reports that single-link posts perform worst but that posts with four or more links do considerably better than single-link posts. If a link were simply a penalty, more links would be worse. So either the number of links is a proxy for something else (a resource list is a different kind of post from a bare share), or the effect is not a per-link deduction at all.
Why do the published studies disagree?
Six reasons, and they explain almost all of the spread.
- Different metrics. Impressions, reach, engagement rate, and comments per post are four different numbers that move differently. A study measuring impressions and a study measuring engagement can both be right and still disagree by a factor of three.
- Different populations.Company pages behave differently from personal profiles, and B2B marketing accounts post links far more often than individual creators. A dataset assembled from a scheduling tool's customers is not a random sample of LinkedIn.
- No definition of a link post. A post with a rendered link preview, a post with a bare URL and no preview, a post with a link in the third paragraph, and a post with the link in the first comment are four different things. Most studies do not say which they measured.
- No effort control. Link posts are, on average, lower-effort posts. If you compare link posts to all other posts, you are partly measuring how much thought went in. Nobody has published a comparison that holds the writing constant.
- Platform drift.LinkedIn's ranking changes continuously. A figure measured in 2023 describes a system that no longer exists, and almost nobody re-runs the measurement or dates the claim.
- Publication incentives.A dramatic percentage gets shared. “We found a modest and confounded effect” does not. The numbers that survived in the wild are selected for memorability, not accuracy.
Has LinkedIn ever confirmed a link penalty?
No. This is the part of the story most guides skip, presumably because it undercuts the headline.
Buffer, in its algorithm guide, answers the question flatly in the negative: LinkedIn will not penalize external links provided the post itself delivers real value. It attributes the underlying position to Laura Lorenzetti of LinkedIn News, quoted as saying that “our algorithm is really focusing on the value and content that's being shared in the post”. Read carefully, that is not a denial that link posts underperform. It is a claim that the link is not the variable being scored.
LinkedIn's own engineering writing points the same way by omission. Its post on community-focused feed optimization describes optimizing for participation in professional conversations, using signals like view likelihood, participation probability, and creator feedback. Outbound links are not mentioned anywhere in it. Neither is any concept of downranking content that sends members off the platform.
So we have a platform that says the link is not the point, and independent measurements that keep finding link posts at the bottom. Both can be true at once, which brings us to the mechanism.
What is the mechanism, if there is one?
Three candidate explanations, in descending order of how well the evidence supports them.
1. Link posts give readers nothing to do
This one is visible in our own data. A shared-article post collects a median of 7 comments against 21 for a text post. A headline plus a URL contains no opinion, no tension, and no question, so there is nothing to reply to. Distribution follows early engagement, and a post that generates none in its first hour does not get a second audience. That is a content problem wearing a format costume.
2. Dwell time penalizes the exit
LinkedIn's engineering team has documented using dwell time as a ranking signal, measured from the point at which at least half of a post is visible, alongside a model that predicts the probability a member skips an update. A reader who clicks out to your website is not accumulating dwell time on LinkedIn, and is not commenting either. No explicit penalty is required for that to hurt you. The scoring simply never sees the engagement, because it happened somewhere else.
3. Platform incentives
The intuitive explanation, and the least evidenced. LinkedIn earns nothing when you send its members to your newsletter, so it would be rational to suppress the behaviour. Hootsuite states this outright. It is plausible, it is unproven, and it is not necessary to explain the data, since the first two mechanisms already do. We include it because it is what most people believe, and because being honest about the strength of each explanation is the point of this page. Our own honest caveat sits under all three. Link posts are often lower-effort posts, a share with one line of commentary attached. Part of the gap we measure is the effort, not the URL, and our data cannot split them. The practical advice happens to be identical either way.
What does a link post that works look like?

The pattern across all three is the same. State your position in the pre-fold fragment. Make the post survive with the link deleted. Then attach the link for the minority who want the source. The mechanics of that opening fragment are in the LinkedIn hooks guide.
Which link posts end up in the bottom half?
The failing ones are recognisable, and they fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the URL. Four shapes account for most of them.
- The headline restated. The caption paraphrases the article title and stops. There is no author in the post, no position, and nothing a reader could agree or disagree with. This is the single most common link post on the platform.
- The compliment.“Great piece by...” followed by a link. It is generous, it costs nothing, and it gives the feed no reason to show it to anyone who does not already know both of you.
- The teaser. A deliberate cliffhanger whose payoff sits behind the click. Readers have learned what this is, and the ones who have not still leave without commenting, which is the outcome the ranking system observes.
- The scheduled cross-post.An automated share from a blog feed, usually with the tool's default caption. It reliably arrives with a rendered preview card, no commentary, and often a block of hashtags, which is the full weak-post costume in one place. See the hashtag data for why that last part matters.
The repair for all four is the same and it is not subtle: write the thing you would have said about the article if you were telling a colleague why to read it, and put that first. If you cannot produce that sentence, the honest conclusion is that you do not have a post yet, only a link.
Is the link penalty getting stronger or weaker?
Nobody can tell you, and the reason is instructive. Almost none of the claims in circulation carry a date. A page updated in 2026 will happily reprint a figure measured against a ranking system from several years earlier, because the figure was never attached to a measurement in the first place, only to another page.
What we can say is that the direction of platform incentives has not changed and the measurements that do exist keep pointing the same way, at varying magnitudes. What we cannot say is whether the effect today is larger or smaller than it was when our dataset was collected. Our cohort predates several rounds of ranking changes, which is exactly why we present it as a pattern rather than a coefficient.
The practical consequence: treat every percentage on this subject, including ours, as directional. If your content strategy only works when the penalty is exactly 27%, it is not a strategy. Build one that survives the number being twice as big or half as big, which in practice means writing posts that are complete without the link.
Does this apply to company pages as well as personal profiles?
Our cohort is entirely individual creators, so we cannot answer for company pages from our own data, and we would rather say that than guess. Metricool's sample spans both account types without splitting the link finding by type, so the widely quoted 27% figure does not settle it either.
Two things are worth knowing anyway. Company pages post links far more often than individuals do, which means any dataset weighted toward brand accounts will contain more link posts and more low-effort ones. And the mechanisms in the section above are not account-type specific: a headline with a URL under it gives a reader nothing to say regardless of who published it. If you run a company page, the fix is the same one, and the harder problem is usually that nobody wants to write in a company voice about anything they actually think.
Does putting the link in the first comment help?
Probably a little, and the evidence is thinner than the confidence with which it gets recommended. Being precise about what is known:
- AuthoredUp publishes a ranking of link placements by distribution impact, with link in the post plus a rendered preview as the worst case and link in the first comment as a lower penalty. It does not publish percentages for any of the tiers.
- Buffer reports that sharing links in the comments does not appear to have a negative impact on post performance.
- Our dataset cannot measure this at all. It captures the post, not the comment thread, so we have no opinion backed by our own numbers.
- Nobody, as far as we can find, has published a controlled test with a stated sample size comparing the same content in both placements.
The practical read: link-in-comments costs you nothing to try and is the least-bad option when a link has to exist. It also has a real cost people ignore. A reader has to find the comment, and on mobile the top comment is not always the one you wrote. If the click genuinely matters, a link at the end of a post that already earned its attention is not obviously worse.
What about link previews, LinkedIn articles, and newsletters?
Three adjacent cases that get lumped in with external links and behave differently.
- The rendered link preview. The card LinkedIn generates from a URL is what AuthoredUp ranks as the highest-penalty placement. Removing the preview and leaving the bare URL is a common workaround. Treat it as unproven, but it costs nothing and it also makes the post look less like an ad.
- LinkedIn articles. Hosted on LinkedIn, so not an external link at all, though they still ask the reader to leave the feed. They behave less like a post and more like a destination you point at from a post.
- Newsletters. Native to the platform and they notify subscribers directly, which is a distribution mechanism a post does not have. The trade-off between the two formats is covered in the newsletter comparison.
What should you post instead of a link?
- Make the post the product. Write the argument or the takeaway natively, in your voice. If the reader never clicks anything, they should still have received the value.
- Demote the link to a footnote. First comment, or the last line of a post that stands on its own. Never in the pre-fold fragment, where it spends the only real estate that decides whether the post gets read at all. See how to start a LinkedIn post.
- Use video where it fits. Native video over-indexes about 2.6 times in the top decile and is the most under-used format in the data. The video breakdown has the detail.
- Save links for when they are the point. A launch, a signup page, a piece you genuinely need traffic on. One link post among many native posts costs you very little. A feed of link posts trains both the ranking system and your readers to skip you.
- Let the profile carry the click. If people want your work, they will find the link in your featured section or your headline, and that route has no reach cost at all. The pipeline version of this is in the lead generation guide.
How do you test this on your own account?
Given how unsettled the published evidence is, your own account is the only sample that describes your audience. A protocol that produces an answer worth acting on:
- Write pairs, not singles. The same argument twice, a week apart: once native, once with the link. Publishing one of each proves nothing.
- Run at least ten pairs. LinkedIn engagement is heavily skewed. One viral post will swamp a sample of four.
- Hold the format constant. If the native version is a video and the link version is a text post, you have tested format, not links.
- Compare medians, and compare comments. Means chase your best post. Comments are the metric that separated strong posts from weak ones most sharply in our data, and they are less noisy than impressions.
- Record the date. Whatever you learn has a shelf life, because the ranking system changes. Re-run it once a year.
How we handle this
What this analysis cannot tell you
Our figures are correlational. Link posts travel with weak engagement. We cannot prove the link caused it, and we think the more likely story is that link posts and low effort come from the same process. The cohort skews toward established creators, all above 1,000 followers, across 65 accounts, and it predates several rounds of ranking changes. Engagement counts are lifetime totals at the time of collection, and post ages vary. We also cannot see comment threads, so nothing here settles the link-in-comments question.
