Across 12,988 posts, the text captured before LinkedIn's truncation ran to a median of 206 characters and a median of 35 words. That is 5.9 characters per word including the space after it, which is slightly above the classic English estimate of about five and a half, and makes sense for a professional register full of multi-syllable nouns. At 5.9 characters per word, the 3,000-character cap holds about 508 words.

Three things push the ratio around. Hashtags are long single words with no spaces, which raises characters per word. A pasted URL is one enormous word, and a tracking link can be 100 characters on its own. Emoji count as one or more characters each while occupying no word at all, and composite emoji with skin tones or flags count as several. If your post is heavy on any of those, the 500-word figure drifts downward.
How long does it take to read a LinkedIn post?
The best available answer comes from a meta-analysis rather than from a blog. Marc Brysbaert's 2019 review in the Journal of Memory and Language pooled 190 studies covering 18,573 participants and put the average adult silent reading rate in English at 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction, with oral reading at 183 (Brysbaert, 2019). Rates are lower for children, older adults, and people reading in a second language, which for a global professional network is not a small caveat.
Run your own drafts through it. Divide the word count by 238 and multiply by 60 for seconds. A 35-word hook is 9 seconds. A 150-word post is 38 seconds. A 400-word post is 101 seconds, which is longer than most people will give a stranger in a feed.
Now the honest part, because reading-time widgets tend to overclaim. Nobody reads a feed at 238 words per minute in the sense the study means. Feed reading is scanning punctuated by short bursts of real reading. So 238 wpm is not a prediction of how long someone will spend on your post. It is a ceiling: the shortest time in which a person could genuinely read what you wrote. If that ceiling is already 90 seconds, you are relying on a level of commitment that very few posts earn.
The second-language caveat deserves more weight than it usually gets on a network with members in every market. If a meaningful share of your audience reads English as a second language, their rate is below 238 and your 300-word post costs them more than it costs you to write. That is an argument for shorter sentences and plainer vocabulary rather than for a shorter post, and it is the same argument that makes a post accessible to everyone else too.
The practical use of this is comparative rather than absolute. A 400-word post is not 25% more expensive than a 320-word post, it is roughly 20 more seconds of someone's life, and 20 seconds is a real quantity you can weigh against what those extra 80 words deliver. Most of the time the honest answer is that they deliver a restatement.
How many words should a LinkedIn post be?
There is no optimum, and any page giving you one is guessing. What there is, is a set of shapes with different word budgets, each with a characteristic failure.

If you want one default, 120 words is a good place to start a draft, and the material can argue you upward. The numbered breakdown is the one shape that is long by construction rather than by indulgence: seven items with a sentence each is already 150 words before any framing, and readers accept the length because the structure tells them exactly what they are getting.

Does word count predict engagement?
No. This is the clearest negative result available on the question, and it holds at every cut we can make.
We ranked 12,988 English posts by engagement rate, which is reactions plus four times comments divided by followers, and compared the top decile of 1,298 posts against the bottom half of 6,494. The median visible hook ran 36 words at the top and 34 at the bottom. Two words. Over the same comparison, median comments ran 72 against 5, a factor of fourteen. Whatever is separating those groups, it is not word count.
A limitation you should hold onto for the rest of this page. The source data captures each post's text only up to LinkedIn's truncation point, so we can measure hook words very precisely and full-post words not at all. Nobody with a public dataset can measure full-post word counts at this scale, which is worth remembering next time you read that posts of exactly 1,300 characters perform best. How many words fit before the fold?
About 35 on a desktop feed, about 24 on a phone. The desktop figure comes straight out of the data: the median captured hook was 35 words at 206 characters. The mobile figure follows from the shorter preview there, roughly 140 characters at the same ratio.
Twenty-four words is a small budget and it is worth sitting with. It is one full sentence and the beginning of a second. It is less than this paragraph. Everything you have been told about setting up context, framing the topic, or easing the reader in has to happen inside it or not at all. Note where the useful content sits in that example. “I messed up” is words three to five. On a phone, where roughly 24 words survive, the post still works. A version that spent its first fifteen words explaining that a new series was coming would not.
Does word count change by topic?
Barely, and the flatness is the finding. Across 20 subject areas the median visible hook ranged from 34 to 38 words. Personal stories run longest, financial and technical posts shortest, and the whole spread is four words.

Every one of those segments draws on at least 30 separate accounts, so this is a population pattern rather than a few prolific writers. The four-word spread has a boring explanation: everyone is writing into the same fixed preview, so the variation you see is the variation in average word length between subjects, not a variation in how much people choose to write. Even less. Text posts, image posts and video posts all sit at a 35-word median. Shared article posts sit at 34, document carousels at 36.

One word of difference across formats whose comment counts differ by a factor of four. That is the argument against word count as a lever, stated as compactly as the data allows. What you attach matters. How many words you type before the cut does not. The format comparison in full is in text versus image posts. Why is word count the wrong target?
Because it measures the container rather than the contents. The useful unit is ideas per post, and the working limit is one.
Try this test on a draft. Say what the post argues in a single sentence, out loud. If you need the word “and” to do it, you have two posts. Splitting them will cut the word count in half without removing anything, which is the only painless way to get shorter. Cutting adjectives is the painful way and it recovers far less than people expect.
The second test is subtraction by paragraph rather than by word. Delete each paragraph in turn and ask whether a reader would notice. In most drafts, the opening paragraph and the paragraph immediately before the close are both deletable, because the first is throat-clearing and the second is a restatement. How many words should a comment, headline, or About section be?
The same logic applies at every other size on the platform, and the useful limits are always well below the enforced ones.
- Comments. The cap is 1,250 characters, roughly 210 words. The useful range is 25 to 70 words, two to four sentences, adding something the post did not contain. Longer comments read as posts published in the wrong place. Comments are also the scarcest signal in our data, with a top-decile median of 72 against 5 in the bottom half, which is why the commenting playbook is worth more attention than most people give it.
- Headline. 220 characters, about 37 words. Only the first six to ten words appear next to your name in feeds and comment threads. Write for those.
- About section. 2,600 characters, about 440 words. It collapses after two or three lines, so the first 40 words carry it.
- Connection request note. 200 characters, about 34 words. Roughly the length of one feed preview, which is a helpful way to think about it.
Do other studies find an ideal LinkedIn word count?
Some do, and the apparent contradiction with our null result is worth taking apart rather than waving away, because it is a good example of two studies measuring different things and appearing to fight.
AuthoredUp analysed 372,126 LinkedIn posts from personal profiles between September 2025 and February 2026 and reports that posts of 1,301 to 2,500 characters earned 27% higher engagement than posts under 400 characters (AuthoredUp). In words, that is roughly 220 to 425 beating roughly 68 or fewer. Our data says length does not separate top posts from weak ones. Both can be true, and here is why.
- Different measurements. They are measuring the whole post. We can only measure the visible hook, because our source truncates at the fold. A finding about total length and a finding about opening length are not in conflict; they are about different parts of the post.
- Different comparisons. Their contrast is between length bands across all posts. Ours is between the top decile and the bottom half within the same population. A band comparison can show a difference that disappears once you condition on quality, and vice versa.
- Composition. Very short posts on LinkedIn skew heavily toward link shares and one-line reposts, which underperform for reasons that have nothing to do with word count. A finding that sub-68-word posts do worse may be a finding that link shares do worse wearing different clothes.
The synthesis we would defend: writing more does not help, but having more to say does, and posts with more to say tend to be longer. That is a claim about substance with length as a side effect, which is a much weaker instruction than “write 1,300 characters” and considerably more likely to be true. If you take a thin idea and pad it to 300 words, no study anywhere predicts that working.
Where do the words go in a 200-word post?
A budget is easier to use than a target. Here is how 200 words distribute in a post that works, based on the shapes that recur in the strong end of our set.

Two observations from that table. The preview is only about a fifth of a 200-word post but decides whether the other four fifths are read at all, which is the most lopsided allocation in writing anywhere. How does this compare with LinkedIn articles and newsletters?
Different medium, different budget, and conflating them is a common mistake. A feed post lives inside a scroll and competes with everything else on the screen. A LinkedIn article or newsletter issue opens on its own page, where the reader has already decided to be, and the reading-time arithmetic changes accordingly.
Practical ranges: a newsletter issue at 600 to 1,200 words is about 150 to 300 seconds at 238 words per minute, which is a reasonable ask from a subscriber and an unreasonable one from a scroller. An article can run longer still. The mistake in one direction is publishing a 2,000-word essay as a feed post, where the cap forces you to cut it to 500 anyway. One rule that transfers across all three: the first 35 words carry the same weight everywhere, because a newsletter arrives in an inbox with a preview line and an article appears in a feed with a truncated summary. The container changes. The opening budget does not.
How do you audit your own word counts?
Twenty minutes, once, and you will stop guessing.
- List your last 30 posts with impressions, reactions and comments from your LinkedIn analytics.
- Add two columns: total word count, and word count up to your first line break. The second one is your real hook length and it is the number nobody tracks.
- Add a third column: total words divided by 238, times 60. That is the reading time in seconds you asked for.
- Sort by engagement rate rather than raw reactions, so posts published when you had fewer followers are not penalised. The engagement rate calculator will do the arithmetic.
- Compare the top third against the bottom third on all three columns. If the word counts overlap, which is the usual outcome, stop optimising length and go and read the first lines back to back instead.
- Look at your longest three posts. Ask whether each earned its reading time. If you cannot say what the extra 200 words bought, you have your answer.
What can this analysis not tell you?
The big one is stated above and worth repeating: we can measure the words in the visible hook, not the words in the whole post, because the source truncates at LinkedIn's fold. Any claim about optimal full-post word counts, including ones with confident numbers attached, is built on data nobody outside LinkedIn has.
The rest are the standard limits. These are correlations, not experiments. The cohort skews toward established creators: 65 accounts, all with at least 1,000 followers. Engagement counts are lifetime totals captured at a single moment, so older posts have had longer to accumulate. And the 238 words per minute figure is a population average from reading studies, not a measurement of feed behaviour; treat it as an upper bound on comprehension speed rather than a prediction of dwell time.
