A good LinkedIn post gets a few hundred to a couple of thousand impressions, not the five to twenty thousand that most benchmark pages quote. Metricool measured 817.67 impressions per post for personal profiles and 812.64 for company pages across 673,658 posts from 63,108 accounts. Socialinsider measured 235 to 525 average impressions per post for company pages in the 1,000 to 5,000 follower tier, depending on format, across 1.3 million posts. So if you clear a thousand impressions, you have beaten the measured average. One thing we will say up front and repeat: our own dataset has no impressions field, so every impression figure on this page comes from a named external study with a link, and the numbers that are ours are engagement numbers, not reach numbers.

How many impressions is good on LinkedIn?
The honest version of the answer needs a population attached, because “good” means nothing without one. Here are the three measurements we could verify, each with its sample stated.

Three independent datasets, three different populations, and they broadly agree: the typical LinkedIn post is seen a few hundred times. If you have 3,000 followers and a post pulls 1,200 impressions, you are doing fine. If it pulls 250, you are near the bottom of your own range and something in the post or the timing is worth looking at.
Notice how close the personal profile and company page averages are in Metricool's data: 817.67 against 812.64. The gap people expect between profiles and pages shows up in engagement, not in impressions. Metricool measured a 2.60% engagement rate for personal profiles against 1.74% for company pages, and reported that profiles run 63% higher engagement than pages. Same eyeballs, different response.
What counts as an impression on LinkedIn?
Worth pinning down, because the benchmark you compare yourself to has to be measuring the same thing your dashboard is.
LinkedIn defines an impression as “the number of times your post was shown on LinkedIn”, and adds a warning most people skip: “This number is an estimate and may not be precise.” Members reached is the separate metric, defined as “the number of distinct members and Pages that saw your post”, and it “does not include repeat displays”.
So impressions can exceed reach, sometimes by a lot, when the same people see a post several times as it resurfaces. For this page the important consequence is narrower: benchmarks built on impressions and benchmarks built on reach are not interchangeable, and most pages never say which they used.
What do 1.3 million posts say about impressions by follower count?
Socialinsider's benchmark study is the only one we found that publishes average impressions per post broken out by both follower tier and format. It covers company pages only, which is a real limitation, but it is a measurement rather than an assertion.

Two readings. The useful one: impressions rise with follower count, but nothing like proportionally. A page with 100,000 followers does not get twenty times the impressions of a page with 5,000. Across the document column it is roughly double. That is the same shape Rival IQ found from a different angle with its 8.63 impressions per 100 followers.
The cautious one: some cells in that table are obviously thin. Image posts at the 50,000 to 100,000 tier read 400, lower than the same format two tiers down, and link posts in the same tier read 50. Those are not findings about how LinkedIn works. They are a signal that some format-and-tier combinations have very few posts behind them. We are reproducing the table as published rather than quietly dropping the awkward cells, because that is the kind of thing readers deserve to see.
Where do the “5,000 to 20,000 impressions” numbers come from?
This is the part worth the price of the page. Search the query and one of the results currently near the top is published by a manufacturer of wireless video transmitters, intercom systems and microphones. It offers precise-looking tiers:

The circulating claims come from a December 2024 post on Hollyland's blog. We read it end to end. It cites nothing. No study, no sample size, no date range, no link to a source, for any figure in it. The numbers are presented as fact and are roughly an order of magnitude above every measurement we could verify.
We are not singling out one page for sport. We are pointing at a mechanism. Numbers like these get copied into the next article, then the next, and after three hops they acquire the authority of consensus without ever acquiring a source. The right response as a reader is boring and effective: before you accept an impressions benchmark, look for the sample size and the date range. If a page does not print both, the number is decoration.
What percentage of your followers actually see a post?
Rival IQ's figure is the cleanest anchor anyone has published: “about 8.63 impressions per 100 followers on each post”, from 58,000 posts by brand handles with at least 2,000 followers, published between January and September 2023.
Three things follow from that single number.
- Followers are not an audience. Under one in ten sees a given post. The other nine are potential, not distribution.
- Buying or farming followers makes your metrics worse. It raises the denominator of every rate you calculate without raising the numerator. Your account looks bigger and every ratio you report looks weaker.
- Per-impression and per-follower rates cannot be compared. The same Rival IQ study reports a median engagement rate of 0.41% by follower and 4.73% by impression. Same posts, same report, an elevenfold difference produced entirely by the denominator.
That last point is the reason so many benchmark pages contradict each other, and we went through it in detail in our breakdown of average LinkedIn engagement rates.
Does post format change how many impressions you get?
Yes, and the gap is larger than the gap between adjacent follower tiers. In Socialinsider's table, multi-image posts beat text posts by roughly two to one at the 5,000 to 10,000 tier. Metricool found that polls deliver the highest average impressions on company pages despite accounting for less than 1% of posts, which is a strong argument for testing a format almost nobody uses. Metricool also measured carousels earning 17 times the interactions of images, while images are posted six times more often.
There is a real disagreement in the field about video. Socialinsider reports video engagement rate rising to 6.00% in its 2026 report, while its own average video views figure fell 36% across every follower tier. Metricool reports video underperforming carousels and images in 2026, a reversal from its 2025 findings. If you are deciding whether to put effort into video posts or document carousels, the published evidence currently points at carousels for impressions and is unsettled on video.
Should a personal profile get more impressions than a company page?
The received wisdom is that profiles crush pages. Metricool's study is the only large one we found that measured both in the same window with the same method, and it says something more precise than the folklore.

Impressions are effectively identical. Interactions per post are nearly identical too. The engagement rate gap comes from the denominator, not from profiles being shown to more people. Metricool adds a behavioural split worth knowing: company pages receive more shares, personal profiles drive significantly more comments. If comments are what you are after, and in our data they are the signal that separates tiers hardest, the profile is the better instrument.
One more number from the same study that reframes what growth looks like: only 7% of LinkedIn company pages grew enough to move into a higher follower tier. Whichever tier you are benchmarking against, the odds are you will still be in it next year, which is another argument for benchmarking against yourself.
Does posting more often raise your impressions?
Not reliably, and there is a case in the data that goes the other way. Socialinsider recorded company pages increasing image posts from an average of five to seven per month and video from two to four per month between 2024 and 2025, over a period in which video views fell 36%. More posts, fewer views each.
Metricool found the sharpest version of this. Accounts above a million followers cut posting frequency by 50.42% and saw engagement rise 94.76%. Smaller accounts between 2,000 and 10,000 followers grew engagement 23.17%. That is one study and it is a correlation, not an instruction to halve your output. What does an impressions number fail to capture?
The behaviour that is growing. Metricool describes a category it calls invisible interactions: “Actions like clicks, carousel swipes, video views and link taps signal user intent even if not publicly visible”. In its year-over-year comparison, likes fell 13%, comments fell 17% and shares fell 10%, while clicks rose 5% and overall engagement rose nearly 14%.
That combination is easy to misread. Fewer visible reactions on the same post does not automatically mean fewer people cared. It can mean the same interest expressed in a way the public counter never shows. It also means a benchmark built only on impressions and public reactions is measuring a shrinking slice of what readers actually do. Metricool also found that roughly 40% of all interactions happen on the first day after posting, which is the measured version of the golden hour idea and a more modest claim than the versions in circulation.
Are LinkedIn impressions falling?
The measured studies agree on the direction and disagree on the size, which is roughly what you would expect from four different panels using four different denominators.
- Metricool, 673,658 posts: impressions down 10% year over year, while overall engagement rose nearly 14%. Likes down 13%, comments down 17%, shares down 10%, clicks up 5%.
- Socialinsider, 1.3 million posts: average video views down 36% in every follower tier, and audience growth for pages with 100,000 to 1 million followers falling from 21.60% to 6.40%.
- AuthoredUp, 621,833 posts: average reach down 34%, and down for 98% of users.
- Buffer, tens of millions of posts: LinkedIn median engagement rate down about 5%, from roughly 6.4% to roughly 6.1%, still the highest of any platform it measures.
Practically, this means any impressions target you took from an article written in 2023 or 2024 is now too high, and the gap is not your fault. We traced where the more dramatic decline claims come from in our investigation of the LinkedIn organic reach decline, and the short version is that the most-quoted figure is also the least verifiable one.
Is there a published impressions benchmark for personal profiles by follower tier?
No. We went looking and could not find one, and that absence is worth stating rather than papering over with an estimate.
Socialinsider publishes impressions by follower tier, but only for company pages. Metricool covers personal profiles at scale and publishes a single cross-account average rather than a tier breakdown. Rival IQ's work is brand handles. Buffer publishes engagement rates by format rather than impressions. Nobody with a disclosed methodology has published what a profile with 3,000 followers should expect against a profile with 30,000.
Which is exactly why the unsourced tier tables spread so easily. There is real demand for that table and no measured version of it, so an invented one fills the gap and then gets copied. If you see a personal-profile impressions tier table anywhere, the first question to ask is which study it came from. In every case we checked, the answer was none.
What can we measure, if not impressions?
Engagement percentiles. Our dataset covers 12,988 English posts from 65 creators with at least 1,000 followers, scored as (reactions + 4 x comments) divided by followers and reported per 1,000 followers. There is no impressions column in it, so we will not produce an impressions number and attach our name to it.

In raw counts, the median post in our cohort earned 122 reactions and 12 comments. Top-decile posts earned a median 235 reactions and 72 comments. Bottom-half posts earned 80 and 5. The comment gap is the one worth staring at: reactions roughly triple between the two tiers while comments increase more than fourteen-fold.
Why is an engagement percentile a better self-benchmark than an impressions target?
Three reasons, and none of them is that impressions do not matter.
- You can compute it from what everyone can see.Reactions, comments and follower count are visible on any post. Impressions are visible only to the author, which means you can never compare your impressions to anyone else's directly.
- It does not depend on an estimate.LinkedIn says outright that the impressions number “is an estimate and may not be precise”. Reaction and comment counts are exact.
- It survives platform-level drift. When impressions fall 10% across the platform, every absolute impressions target you set last year becomes wrong. A percentile computed against your own trailing thirty posts recalibrates itself.
The reason to still watch impressions is diagnostic rather than comparative. A post with normal impressions and weak engagement is a content problem. A post with collapsed impressions and normal engagement-per-impression is a distribution problem, and that is a different fix, covered in why a LinkedIn post gets no views.
How do you benchmark your own impressions in twenty minutes?
- Export your last 30 posts. Record date, format, impressions, members reached, reactions and comments. Thirty is enough to see a distribution and short enough that your follower count has not moved much.
- Compute impressions per 100 followers for each post.Divide impressions by your follower count, multiply by 100. Compare your median against Rival IQ's 8.63. If you are well above it, your distribution is healthier than a typical brand account. If you are well below it, look at format mix before you look at anything else.
- Compute impressions divided by members reached. A ratio near 1.0 means each viewer saw the post once. Higher means it was re-surfaced.
- Sort and find your own percentiles. Your median is the fifteenth value. Your top decile is your best three posts. You now have a personal version of the Socialinsider table that is actually about you.
- Split by format. Compute a median for each of your formats. Most accounts find one format quietly dragging the average down, and for many it is the shared external link, which sits at the bottom of both our link-post analysisand Socialinsider's engagement table at 3.25%.
- Re-run it every month. Since platform-wide impressions are moving, an absolute target set once will drift out of date. Your own trend will not.

What are the limits of these benchmarks?
- Socialinsider's data is company pages only. 16,645 business pages, no personal profiles. If you post from a profile, treat it as directional.
- Rival IQ's window is 2023. Given that impressions have fallen since, 8.63 per 100 followers is probably an upper bound today.
- Metricool's figures are averages, not medians. Social engagement is heavily skewed, so a mean sits above what most posts actually get.
- Panel studies measure their own customers. Metricool, Buffer and AuthoredUp all measure accounts that use their products, which skews toward people who take posting seriously.
- Our percentile data is correlational and comes from 65 established creators, all above 1,000 followers. Engagement counts are lifetime totals at scrape time and post ages vary. Text findings describe the visible hook only.
- We have no impressions data. Every impressions number here belongs to somebody else and is linked to its source.

Around 815 impressions per post is the measured average across 673,658 posts. A few hundred is normal for a small account, and roughly 300 to 525 is what company pages in the 1,000 to 5,000 follower tier actually average by format. Clearing a thousand puts you above the typical post. Expect about 8.63 impressions for every 100 followers, and expect that number to keep drifting down.
The tiers promising five to twenty thousand impressions are not measurements and never were. The better move is to stop hunting for an external impressions target and build the personal version: thirty posts, your own median, your own percentiles, split by format. That is the same method behind our study of 12,988 LinkedIn posts, and it is the only benchmark that is genuinely about your account.

We scored 12,988 English posts from 65 creators by engagement rate (reactions + 4× comments, divided by the author's followers) and compared the top 10% against the bottom half. The dataset captures each post's text up to LinkedIn's “see more” fold, which is exactly what a reader sees before deciding to engage. These are correlations, not guarantees.
